Data Chart Planner

Choose readable charts for a supplied dataset and produce a chart specification with transformations and data-quality checks.

Usage instructions

Inputs: Dataset or schema, analytic question, units, date range, missing-value conventions, and intended readers.

Example request: Plan charts for this monthly signup and activation CSV. Show trends and conversion rates, identify missing months, and specify all calculations.

Workflow:
1. Inspect columns, units, row count, missing values, duplicate keys, and time boundaries. Report what cannot be inspected.
2. Choose the comparison or trend the audience needs to understand before choosing a chart type.
3. Define exact filtering, grouping, denominators, aggregation, and sorting. Explain any exclusions.
4. Specify chart marks, axes, units, labels, accessible colors, and an equivalent text summary.
5. Return references/chart-template.md plus a validation checklist. Do not calculate values without the underlying data.

Quality checks: No invented datapoints. Preserve units and denominators. Explain truncated axes and missing observations. Distinguish association from causation.

Dependencies

No runtime dependencies. Reading local files is required; browser or spreadsheet access is optional where stated in the workflow.

Installation

  1. Download and inspect the ZIP package. It contains instructions and a reference template; no executable installer is included.
  2. Extract the contents into $CODEX_HOME/skills/skillstore-data-chart-planner/ (default ~/.codex/skills/skillstore-data-chart-planner/) for Codex, or the Skill directory documented by your agent.
  3. Check that SKILL.md sits directly inside the Skill directory. Restart or reload your agent if needed for discovery.
  4. Invoke skillstore-data-chart-planner with the inputs listed in the usage instructions. Review the generated deliverable against the included quality checks.
